During the final meeting after negotiating a deal to broadcast cooking segments from her daytime shows, netting her company several million dollars, she “stood facing the opposite direction, alternately looking out a window and poking at her mobile phone,” according to the book. “When it came time to sign, she strode to the table, signed the papers, and strode out of the room without a handshake or even a glance.” Later, after Stewart produced a pilot for Ina Garten, she ordered the tapes destroyed because Gartens Fiestaware looked too much like the dinnerware Stewart used on her show, and she was “unhappy that another woman was going to be the star of a show produced by her company.” Yikes! 4Giada had to train herself to smile Reuters Giada de Laurentiis was told by her producer to “smile whenever she spoke on camera, no matter what was happening around her,” which was easier said than done. Her first 12-hour shoot “made her cheek muscles ripple with pain,” but were pretty sure shes accustomed to it by now. 5The first set was a dump iStock The first set had no oven (and when they finally got one it was so low-quality that the glass would constantly shatter), the smells of the food cooking would permeate the networks entire office, the sinks had no drainage so stagehands would have to be constantly emptying out slop buckets, and when Mario Batali would remove food from the fictional “oven,” he had to “simulate the sound of an oven door slamming by stamping his foot on the floor.” 6′Bam!’ was originally intended to wake up a drowsy crew AP Much of the early crew worked many jobs to make ends meet (the reason their names didnt appear in credits was because they were paid below normal union rates), and Emeril had to deal with camera operators that were falling asleep as he cooked. “Inspired first by the need to keep the cameramen awake, Emeril started yelling as he added ingredients to dishes ‘Bam!’” And a legend was born. 7Iron Chefs Chairman Kaga is a crazy character AP If youve seen an episode of the original Japanese Iron Chef, youll know that Chairman Kaga, with his wild outfits and bizarre antics, is a bit of an eccentric. But the actor who portrayed him, Takeshi Kaga, who also played Jean Valjean in the Japanese production of Les Miserables, was also a bit of an oddball. When the production team came to New York to film the first crossover challenge with Bobby Flay as challenger, Kaga, whos apparently a Method actor, stayed in character the entire time that he was in the city. Now thats dedication! 8Batali flubbed his first line, then cut himself AP “Im Mario Batali, chef and co-owner of Po restaurant, an Italian village,” was the first sentence the now-legendary chef spoke on-air. Then, in one of the early episodes of his show, Molto Mario, he accidentally grated his knuckles along with some cheese. Bleeding and in pain, and all-too-aware of the networks “no do-over” rule, “he plunged his hand into a bowl of tomatoes” and crushed them until it was time for commercials. 9′Iron Chef’ aired on UPN before Food Network, with William Shatner as host Reuters Yes, you read that right. In 2001, Food Network turned down the opportunity to buy the rights to Iron Chef, and it was picked up by UPN, who quickly butchered it.
Durga Puja is mostly about fanfare and food loads of it! It’s a time when meticulously maintained fitness regimes go for a toss, given the late night pandal-hopping, night-long addas, groggy, gym-less mornings, eating out and loads of mishti on Dashami. So what is Tollywood’s young brigade doing to negate the effect four days of merry-making has had on the carefully toned abs and curves? CT talks to some of our actors about their getting-back-to-shape regime. Srabanti I stuck to vegetarian food between Sasthi and Nabami, but from Nabami night I ate only non-veg, be it mutton curry or biryani. And now I am surviving on fruits and juices, a bowl of boiled veggies for lunch and fish sauteed in one teaspoon of olive oil for dinner! And, of course, there is no missing those long morning and afternoon treadmill session. Nusrat Jahan I curse myself for eating so much during Puja. Now, I can’t even miss the gym for a day as I have to get back in shape as soon as possible. I am avoiding non-veg food and eating only boiled veggies without salt. When hungry, I drink juice or eat a few slices of apple. I also have dry fruits in the evening and try to have dinner by 7 pm. I am drinking loads of water to detoxify my system. Raima Sen I would love to be miles away from food now, given the way my diet took a beating this Durga Puja! I am working really hard to get rid of the extra pounds.

Last week’s results were not an anomaly. The PiracyData team has been collecting data for three weeks, and during that period, not a single highly pirated film has been available to stream. And many highly-pirated movies have not been available for rental or download. Piracydata.org was created by two tech policy researchers at the Mercatus Center, a libertarian think tank, and by Matt Sherman, a software engineer based in New York. The team’s leader, Jerry Brito, says he got the idea for the site after a hearing in which major content holders criticized Google for failing to do enough to combat piracy. That criticism came despite the fact that Google has taken a number of steps to prevent illegal sharing of copyrighted works. A year ago, Google began automatically demoting search results that are the target of numerous takedown requests by copyright holders. Yet despite that proactive approach, searches for Hollywood blockbusters frequently turn up links to pirate websites. “The MPAA is complaining that Google leads people to infringing links,” Brito argues. “But what’s the alternative?” The movies that are available on file-sharing sites, he says, are “very rarely available for legal acquisition.” Unsurprisingly, MPAA spokesperson Kate Bedingfield disagrees. “Today there are more ways than ever to watch movies and TV shows legally online, and more are constantly being added,” she said in an e-mailed statement. “If a particular film isn’t available for stream or purchase at a given moment, however, it does not justify stealing it from the creators and makers who worked hard to make it.” Brito insists he’s not trying to excuse piracy. But, he argues, “I don’t understand how the industry is making a big show about Google not taking voluntary measures to help with piracy.” Hollywood, he says, could “change its business model to take their own voluntary measures to deal with piracy,” by making movies more readily available through legal online channels. If it chooses not to do that, he believes, they have no business complaining that tech companies aren’t doing enough to combat the problem.

Entertainment Geekly: What has Robert Rodriguez done to movies?
Although the Hollywood icons are getting older, theyre not showing any signs of slowing down, so we assume theyre not done teaming up to kick ass just yet providing they can find the right project. Here are six custom movie scenarios carefully crafted for more collaboration in every genre that we know and love. Lets start with their favorite: ACTION: Title: Abolition Man Logline: New York Citys toughest retired cop (Stallone) accidentally travels through time and finds himself trapped in the South at the height of the slave trade. With Lincolns Gettysburg Address decades away, he takes matters into his own hands and clashes with a brutal plantation owner (Schwarzenegger) while fighting for abolition. SCIENCE FICTION: Title: The Disposables Logline: In the future, senior citizens retire to their own designated country to avoid overpopulation in the United States. But when two tough-as-nails World War III veterans (Stallone, Schwarzenegger) discover that country is actually a death camp for citizens deemed disposable, they set out to prove their worth to society by destroying it. FAMILY COMEDY: Title: Double Play Logline: A retired CIA operative (Stallone) moves his family to a small Ohio town where he volunteers to coach his sons Little League baseball team, only to discover one big problem: his former KGB rival (Schwarzenegger) has already settled in the same town and coaches his own sons team, the Reds. HISTORICAL DRAMA: Title: The Bolshevik Artists Logline: When Bolshevik leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin was on his deathbed in 1924, he envisioned loyal disciples and political rivals Joseph Stalin (Schwarzenegger) and Leon Trotsky (Stallone) sharing power. Three years later, Stalin had exiled Trotsky and seized control. (Alt tagline: This Bromance was Truly Rocky). FRANCHISE SEQUEL: Title: Terminators Logline: The T-800 (Schwarzenegger) is back, and this time hes protecting 2-year-old John Connor from a robotic version of himself the JC-100 (Stallone), which Skynet manufactured after capturing and killing Connor in the year 2048. HORROR/THRILLER: Title: Big Bad Wolf Logline: As one of the worlds foremost authorities on the supernatural underworld that has been horrifying humanity for centuries, Professor Robert Hood (Schwarzenegger) has slain every monster he has ever encountered except the one responsible for his daughters death. 20 years later, the shapeshifting beast (Stallone) has resurfaced, and Prof.
6 Movies Ideas for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone After ‘Escape Plan’
He cast Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson at a moment when they were controversial; that made Machete Kills a fun talking point, which may have been the whole point. But you wonder what would happen if Rodriguez put aside the empire for a year and let himself be a filmmaker again. There are signs throughout his filmography of real sparks of life. Its in From Dusk Till Dawn, when the movie suddenly pivots from Crime Drama to Vampire Horror. Its there in The Faculty, Rodriguezs sole hired-hand picture, when the high school stereotypes try to weed out the alien by snorting cocaine. Its there every time Mickey Rourke walks onscreen. And its all over Planet Terror. Among cinephile-types, Rodriguezs half of Grindhouse usually suffers in comparison to Death Proof, partially because Death Proof is more overt about making a statement. But Planet Terror is a wild, almost primal B-picture, a cocktail of zombie movies and one-legged sex scenes and a kid shooting himself in the face and a surprisingly non-symbolic castration motif and one of the swaggeriest music scores in horror-film history. Planet Terror opens with that score playing over Rose McGowan go-go dancing . Its sex without the quote marks, so over-the-top that the film starts to break apart; it feels like an essay in voyeurism and also the perviest home video ever, with a sneakily profound closing shot that lingers just long enough on McGowans tear-covered face to make the randy fun feel self-critical. Rodriguez wrote the score, and wrote the scene, and filmed it himself, co-edited it in post-production; for good measure, he also hooked up with Rose McGowan. Grindhouse was not a success. Rodriguez spent a few years trying to cast McGowan in an appropriately barely dressed genre film: Barbarella, Red Sonja, Women in Chains. Nothing clicked; they broke up; Rodriguez seems happy now to keep his franchises chugging along.

Would Piracy Decline if More Movies Were Online Legally?
Physicist Sameet Sreenivasan of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York conducted a detailed data analysis of novel and unique elements in movies throughout the 20th century. Sreenivasan analyzed keywords used on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) to observe trends. A novelty score was given based on the number of times any given keyword was used to describe another film. Films that had higher novelty scores featured a word that was rarely used to describe it. While films with lower novelty scores had a keyword used to describe a variety of them. A range from zero to one was applied as the novelty score, with the least novel being zero. To depict the evolution of film culture over time, Sreenivasan then lined up the scores chronologically. “You always hear about how the period from 1929 to 1950 was known as the Golden Age of Hollywood,” Sreenivasan said to Wired. “There were big movies with big movie stars. But if you look at novelty at that time, you see a downward trend.” After studio systems fell in the 1950s, filmmakers burst with new ideas which enhanced the movies during the 1960s. Films like Bonnie and Clyde in 1967, Breathless in 1960, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in 1966 were all very well received. In addition, plot lines, novel styles and film techniques helped create the increase in Sreenivasan’s analysis of that period.
Many of the most-pirated movies aren’t available for legitimate online purchase
Pacific Rim, The Internship and Monsters University are also available for digital purchase. White House Down, Elysium, The Mortal Instruments City of Bones, and 2 Guns are not available in any digital format at the moment. The fact that the films are not available for streaming isn’t too surprising, since services like Netflix don’t specialize in new releases thanks to the cost of licensing them. Meanwhile, the new films Netflix does gain the rights to often don’t hit the service until a few weeks after their DVD release , as part of the deals Netflix worked out with studios. A number of these films, meanwhile, are simply between their theatrical and DVD release. White House Down, for example, is scheduled to be released on Amazon Instant Video on Nov. 5 for $4.99 rental or $14.99 purchase. Elysium and The Mortal Instruments City of Bones arrive on DVD in December, while 2 Guns will be released in November. PiracyData.org is the brainchild of Jerry Brito and Eli Dourado from the Mercatus Center , a conservative think tank within George Mason University, as well as developer Matt Sherman. In a FAQ , they said they wanted to determine if consumers “turn to piracy when the movies they want to watch are not available legally.” They were inspired by an MPAA report that said search engines were not taking sufficient voluntary measures to combat piracy. When the site debuted yesterday, however, some of the information was incorrect. Pacific Rim, for example, was not listed as being available for digital purchase.
Romeros film is basically Cloverfield but with a zombie outbreak; the 1976 is just a weird noir drama about a guy trying to murder his mother-in-law. In any case, dead people dont need diaries. 2) Flight of the Living Dead This 2007 film takes all the excitement of a zombie outbreak and limits to a single plane. When a bunch of scientists try to ship a zombie, it of course gets loose and start infecting other passengers. Its most notable for a scene where a zombie gets sucked through a jet engine and somehow is still moving afterwards. Please insert your own flying is already hell jokes here. 3) Dance of the Dead When a freak accident at a power plant causes corpses from the nearby cemetery to rise from their graves, the zombies attack the nearby high school, where prom is taking place. Dance is a horror-comedy, so you shouldnt mind things like the power of rock n roll soothing the zombies. But Im still curious who would zone a power plant, a cemetery and a high school so close to each other. 4) Dale of the Dead The only thing I know about this 2010 movie is what Ive gleaned from the trailer, and thats that four friends are trying to survive the zombie apocalypse, which admittedly seems pretty under control in the above trailer. Well, that and the filmmakers clearly thought Shaun of the Dead was onto something, title-wise.
If it chooses not to do that, he believes, they have no business complaining that tech companies aren’t doing enough to combat the problem. But Bedingfield counters that films get heavily pirated even when they’re made available in online formats. The Walking Dead was pirated 500,000 times within 16 hours despite the fact that it is available to stream for free for the next 27 days on AMCs website and distributed in 125 countries around the world the day after it aired,” she says. “Our industry is working hard to bring content to audiences when they want it, where they want it, but content theft is a complex problem that requires comprehensive, voluntary solutions from all stakeholders involved.” Finally, Bedingfield points out that the Mercatus Center counts Google among its funders. Correction: The original data supplied to us by PiracyData.org was inaccurate. It showed 1 movie available for rental and 4 available for purchase. In fact, at least 3 were available for rental and 6 were available for purchase.

But despite a more open exchange between Iran and the six world powers – Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States – diplomats said no breakthrough had been achieved in the Geneva talks and many disagreements remained. “We are waiting for substantive change,” Fabius told parliament. “Given what he know on Iran, the Guide (Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei) being the same, we are compelled to be cautiously open.” Paris has been one of the strongest advocates of sanctions to pressure Iran over its nuclear program. The United States and its allies suspect Iran is seeking nuclear bomb-making capability despite Tehran’s insistence that its program has only peaceful aims. French President Francois Hollande was the first Western leader to meet new Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly in September, warning that Paris expected “concrete gestures”. “It is too early to draw conclusions,” Fabius said. “France will not mix up appearances with reality.” So far Iran has defied U.N. Security Council demands that it halt enrichment and other sensitive nuclear activities, leading to multiple rounds of crippling international sanctions that have reduced Iranian oil exports, caused inflation to soar and the value of the Iranian rial currency to plummet. Speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks, a Western diplomat said the negotiations had been neither positive nor negative, but the major powers had been able to ask specific questions on key issues and received certain answers creating a basis to move forward. “We can’t say that we will find a solution in the coming weeks, but we now have a tool for a common exchange,” he said. The fact that all the Iranian negotiators spoke English made life easier, he added.
Protestors express the same outside the Church of Scientology in France. Newser.com. France Scientology: Labeled a “fraud” by France’s high court. Protestors express the same outside the Church of Scientology in France. Though recognized as a formal religion in the United States and elsewhere, the practice of Scientology has just been branded as a scam and a racket in France, despite cries of religious discrimination, reports the AFP via Yahoo! News on Oct. 16. There are approximately 45,000 Scientologists in France. The obtuse religion, founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, came under fire in the European country when five former members charged the organization with coercing them into spending thousands of dollars on required reading material, questionable services and Church merchandise. The Church was initially found guilty of commercial harassment, and on appeal the charge has stood. Church officials are not happy that their easily misunderstood religion has been declared fraudulent. Scientology is a worldwide religious movement practiced in 184 nations. Its bona fide rights of its members to practice their faith unimpeded by government interference have been acknowledged by the high courts of many nations, including unanimous decisions by the European Court of Human Rights, a statement from the French Church of Scientology after the verdict reads. The conviction carried a fine of 600,000 Euros ($820,000 dollars), in addition to the Church losing any foothold as it attempts to become a recognized religion in France.

Last years wine-grape harvest was the smallest in at least 40 years after weather damage and disease, according to the Agriculture Ministry. Rising bulk wine prices more than made up for a drop in volumes sold in 2012-13, with the cost of bulk whites without a regional indication jumping 32 percent, FranceAgriMer data show. Stocks are at historically low levels, very much below the five-year average, Janvier said in Montreuil-sous-Bois, France. Due to the weakness of supply, prices rose to a rather high level. This years wine production will probably rise less than the 6.6 percent increase to 44.1 million hectoliters forecast by the Agriculture Ministry, based on the outlook provided by various regions, according to Eric Rosaz, in charge of wine industry at FranceAgriMer. The ministry forecasts are a bit optimistic, Rosaz said. We wont be very far from 43.5 million hectoliters. 2001-02 Low Wine producers start the season with the lowest stocks since at least 2001-02, FranceAgriMer said, citing customs data. Inventories of wine with a protected designation of origin fell to 23.2 million hectoliters as of Aug. 1 from 25.8 million hectoliters a year earlier. The biggest slide in wine inventories was noted in the combined regions of Burgundy , Beaujolais, Savoy and Jura, where stocks slumped 30 percent to 1.72 million hectoliters, according to the crop office. The volume of wine held by producers in Bordeaux dropped 9 percent to 8.96 million hectoliters, while Champagnes inventories fell 6 percent to 4.22 million hectoliters, according to FranceAgriMer. In the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, Frances biggest wine region by production, stocks at the start of August fell 16 percent to 7.34 million hectoliters. The wine year in France runs from Aug. 1 to July 31. Still Wine The volume of still wine held by merchants dropped about 3 percent to 13.2 million hectoliters, while inventories of sparkling varieties rose 13 percent to 7.9 million hectoliters, crop office data showed. Frances sales of bulk wine with a regional indication rose 7 percent in 2012-13 to 606 million euros ($828 million), with higher prices for all varieties making up for smaller volumes of red and rose, FranceAgriMer said.

According to the book’s introduction by Robertson, the project began when his son was working part time at a childrens recreation and learning center, and noticed that they didnt respond to the average, pandering childrens music near as much as they did to really good songs performed by great artists. So the quartet of lifelong music aficionados began to work together to create a book that could introduce and inform kids about artists whose music has shaped the world around them. The list of those included stretches back as far as jazz innovator Louis Armstrong and journeys from jazz (Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald) to Great American Songbook pop (Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole), primal rock (Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard) to R&B and soul (Ray Charles, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield) to country (Williams, Johnny Cash , Patsy Cline) to classic rock (Dylan, Carole King) and reggae (Bob Marley). PHOTOS: Unexpected musical collaborations The connective thread, beyond the essential quality of the chosen recordings, was focusing on music created by those Robertson refers to as the original risk takers, extremely unique, and tremendously influential to future generations. The 128-page books descriptions of the artists, while short and to the point, is colorfully revealing. Ray Charles, for instance, redefined rhythm and blues with his personal brand of high-energy ultra-groove, a comment complemented by a quote from Frank Sinatra saying Ray Charles is the only real genius in the business. Of Joni Mitchell, whom Robertson famously backed on her recording of Raised on Robbery, the book states, Rather than focusing on political and social issues like traditional folk artists such as Woody Guthrie, Joni wanted to tell stories that spoke to personal, human truths and her songs revealed quite a bit about her life. Her romances, her neighbors, and the daughter she had to give up for adoption all found their way into her songs. The tracks selected for each artist, not surprisingly, are kid-friendly choices including the Beatles Here Comes the Sun, Cashs Get Rhythm, Mitchells The Circle Game, Billie Holidays Lets Call the Whole Thing Off and Marleys Rebel Music. The illustrations were created by 15 different artists. All four authors will appear at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Barnes & Noble store at the Grove, 189 The Grove Drive, Los Angeles. Robertson also will be a guest on Tavis Smiley’s show Wednesday, Oct. 16. Update at 12:05 p.m. Oct. 16: An earlier version of this posted listed the price of ‘Legends, Icons & Rebels’ as $35.
The two official YouTube versions of the song drew 217 million views worldwide over the same period. For the record company, the value of the music video is largely promotional, much like traditional radio. Although YouTube doesn’t sell music, it can expose a song to its 1 billion monthly users. Holley, Warner Music Nashville’s senior vice president of consumer marketing. Working in partnership with YouTube, Warner Music embarked on a rare musical joint venture between its recording artists and the musicians who have cultivated their fan bases on the site. Warner contacted seven YouTube creators whose musical styles were compatible with those of Warner Music Nashville/Atlantic Records singer-songwriter Hayes and Atlantic Records artist Mraz. It invited Tyler Ward, Kina Grannis, Peter Hollens and other YouTube notables to record cover versions of “Everybody’s Got Somebody but Me,” which were incorporated into the original song to produce a new track. The resulting musical collaboration served as the sound track for a music video, “The Hunter Hayes YouTube Orchestra featuring Jason Mraz,” which debuts exclusively on YouTube, before the anticipated release of the official music video this month. “When it makes sense and when there’s a natural connection, we try to bring these collaborations together,” said Ali Rivera, YouTube’s West Coast head of artist label relations. “This is the first time we’ve created an entire music video, using more established musicians and the YouTube creators.” PHOTOS: Hollywood Backlot moments Warner even relocated the official music video shoot to Los Angeles from Nashville so Hayes and Mraz could accommodate the project, which is directed by filmmaker and YouTube music producer Kurt Hugo Schneider.

New album sales One of the more interesting statistics is regarding new album sales. While I could probably have guessed that record sales were down, the recentness and sharpness of the decline was interesting. As you can see below, since 2008 new record sales have dropped by almost 50%. I am sure that number is even greater if you go back to, say, 1999, when it was cool to have CD books and stacks of albums. Year $100,000 for placement in a cell-phone commercial 1 $100,000 One of the more interesting data points that stands out is the minuscule amount of money that these bands earn from the streaming services that have become so prevalent in the world today. If Pandora (see IB Research reports ) or Spotify are somewhat responsible for taking album dollars out of the pockets of artists, they should at least be making up a decent amount of that lost income. It makes the Internet Radio Fairness Act seem all the more absurd. The Market Realist Take With online streaming and Internet radio services becoming more popular than listening to CDs, the music industry and Internet radio companies like Pandora have been embroiled in a continuing battle over royalty payments. Pandora has stated that its profitability has been affected because Internet radio stations have to pay six times the royalty rate of other mediums. Pandora pushed for the passage of the Internet Radio Fairness Act, which would lower royalty rates, but the bill faced stiff opposition from labels, publishers, and music artists. Pandora Media recently won a case against the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) with a federal judge ruling that ASCAP has to provide Pandora access to its entire catalog of music through 2015, when the current licensing terms are up for renewal. Clear Channel and Warner Music Group struck a mutually beneficial partnership deal in September that will allow WMG to promote its artists through Clear Channel in return for low royalty rates on Clear Channels iHeartRadio. Although this deal was considered groundbreaking, theres no actual legislation yet that will ensure fair compensation for the artists.

Low fast-food wages come at high public cost, reports say
area small business who have been negatively affected by actions of the Congress sitting on Capitol Hill. Food trucks operators were an affiliate business especially affected by the Federal government shutdown. The owners/operators offood trucks rely heavily on foot trafficspecifically the thousands of government employees who grab a bite as navigate throughout the District. The constant flow from government employees, tourists and residents makes the District of Columbia an ideal city for food trucks to thrive. SEE RELATED: Despite government shutdown, Americas welfare state keeps growing The government being shut down reduced the number of government employees and tourists walking those streets, putting their lives andlivelihoodinto jeopardy. Initially not much of a drop off in business but as time passes, the impact has been greater, said Doug Povich, co-owner of DC-based food truck Red Hook Lobster Pound. Povich and his trucks saw roughly a 10-20% drop off of business since the shutdown began. Suffering from the shutdown was ascerbated by heavy rains and dropping temperatures. Rodney Goh, owner of Fire & Rice, encountered one of his worst weeks of business so far this year. SEE RELATED: Is the government shutdown a model for the future? Theres no way I came even close to breaking even this week, and actually lost quite a bit of money, said Goh. Again, a huge function of that is the rain, although Im sure the government shutdown only added to the lack of sales, and also could be a significant reason for Wednesdays lack of sales, given there was no rain. The shutdown has also closed the numerous monuments and museums found throughout the District that are normally frequented by thousands of tourists hoping to explore D.C and try the local flavor. This lack of potential customers has lead to a highly competitive market these past two weeks. Most trucks have been avoiding locations that are known for their mainly government employee based foot traffic and sought out more promising locations. In consequence, this has created a drastic increase in the competition for good parking spots and prospective customers. Areas such as LEnfant Plaza, a normally bustling area full of government employees grabbing a bite to eat from various trucks, have been especially slow. Many of the food truck owners throughout the city have emphasized the lack of business in LEnfant and have attempted to sell elsewhere.
‘Chinese Food’ Song Deemed Offensive, Viral Video Producer Responds
Ark Music Factory co-founder Patrice Wilson, who wrote and produced Friday, which now has more than 220 million views on YouTube, created the song, Chinese Food, which features 11-year-old Alison Golds singing about the Chinese food dishes she loves to eat after a night of hitting the club. The Los Angeles-based production company is known for its sassy, tongue-in-cheek, teeny pop tunes. Wilson has also found success with his Its Thanksgiving song from teen singer Nicole Westbrook. But the imagery used in the Chinese Foodmusic video, which was posted on YouTube three days ago and already has more than 7 million views, has some crying foul. With lyrics like, I love Chinese food. You know that its true. I love fried rice, I love noodles, I love chow mein, chow m-m-m-mein, Alison and other young girls in the video are seen dressed in geisha garb even though geisha is from Japanese culture. In another scene, they are playing Monopoly to the tune of I like Chinese food and some wonton soup. Get me broccoli while I play Monopoly. The camera zooms in on a dog figurine on Oriental Avenue on a Monopoly board. In another scene, Alison is frolicking through a field with Wilson, in a giant panda suit, by her side. At the end of the video, the giant panda throws a fortune cookie at the camera.
No matter how fancy the surroundings or interesting the smells, if the locals arent going, then theres a good chance the food is either not great, too expensive, or worse, unhygienic. Watch Whats Happening in the Kitchen The best street stalls are the open ones, without hidden kitchens or couriers running off to fetch mystery ingredients. Generally speaking, you want to see your food being prepared. Anything sitting out or ready-made is a red flag for bacteria. Other clues: Warm dishes should be hot when theyre handed to you and cooked fresh on the spot. If you see raw or pre-cooked food sitting out in the open, its another signal to move on. Dont be afraid of looking rude: Its better than spending your holiday in your hotel bathroom. Check the Prices Part of the appeal of street food is scooping up a bargain, which is only part of why you should avoid stalls running on a tourist-based income. Find out what you should pay (you can get good averages from hotel staff or guide books) because high prices usually indicate that a stand makes its profits from tourists, not locals. Besides being a rip-off, a transient customer base means not worrying about attracting repeat customers. By acting like a local eater, youll have an authentic culinary experience you wont have to pay for it later.
Their restaurants offer a valuable entry into the workforce for millions of people, they said, including the 40percent who are students. These misleading efforts use a very narrow lens and selective data to attack the industry for their own purposes, and fail to recognize that the majority of lower-wage employees work part-time to supplement a family income, said Scott DeFife, executive vice president of the National Restaurant Association. The inclusion of the earned income tax credit shows just how misleading these efforts are, as it is a tax credit specifically designed for working families, not public assistance, and is used to inflate their numbers. But many others are trying to support households, advocates said. They pointed to the growing activism among fast-food workers, poorly paid employees of federal contractors and other low-wage workers who for the past year have been calling a series of small but growing number of one-day strikes. They are demanding pay raises to $15 an hour and an easier route to forming unions. The job actions are supported by organized labor groups, including the Service Employees International Union and Change to Win, which are lending staff and cash to the effort. The unions aim to increase pressure on lawmakers to raise the $7.25-per-hour federal minium wage while highlighting widening economic inequality. Tionnie Cross, 29, works at a McDonalds in Brooklyn, where she makes $7.35 an hour. Most weeks she is assigned no more than 28 hours, leaving her to rely on food stamps and government-sponsored health care to make ends meet, she said. I have a job, and Im broke, she said. It is really bad, because I dont want to depend on taxpayer money to survive. Fast-food industry representatives call the workers demands unrealistic. Raising wages for cooks, cashiers and drive-through window workers who are paid a median wage of $8.69 an hour, according to the report by the Illinois and Berkeley economists would ultimately cause these businesses to hire fewer workers overall, they argue. Also, they say, the franchisees who own many fast-food restaurants operate on thin profit margins, and dramatically raising wages would force them out of business. But advocates for fast-food workers say the new reports demonstrate what they have long suspected: that the fast-food industry generates substantial profits that arent distributed equitably.

Norwegian Air to Link London Gatwick to New York, Florida
Still, London growth is outpacing the rest of the country. The citys economy will grow by 1.9 percent annually to 2018, 0.5 percent faster than the U.K. as a whole, the CEBR said this year. Part of the growth is coming from technology companies as London emerges as the undisputed European capital for Internet businesses. Both Amazon Inc. and Google Inc. ( GOOG:US ) are building large new facilities in the city, with the search giant pledging to employ 5,000 staff in a new office next to the renovated Kings Cross railway hub. While headquarters moves motivated in part by tax arbitrage dont necessarily bring many jobs to London, they at least create work for local professional-services providers like lawyers and management consultants, said Mark Gregory, the chief U.K. and Ireland economist at Ernst & Young LLP. Business Destination To be sure, Londons appeal as a business destination isnt assured. The opposition Labour Party has said it will reverse corporate tax cuts if it returns to government.
London’s Tech City picks first 25 firms for help to grow
CDT, October 16, 2013 LONDON (Reuters) – Tech City, a government-backed body promoting London’s technology hub, on Thursday picked a first 25 British-based online businesses, in sectors such as property, fashion and leisure, to receive help to grow into major companies. It chose firms including travel search engine Skyscanner, property business Zoopla and games company Mind Candy – with its Moshi Monsters brand – to get public and private support with the aim of becoming international companies that could eventually be listed or bought out by Internet giants. The programme involves the Tech City Investment Organisation, which was set up to attract investment to the “Silicon Roundabout” area on the edge of London’s City financial district. Its “Future Fifty” scheme was launched in April, by finance minister George Osborne and Tech City’s chief executive Joanna Shields, to mentor companies and provide business development assistance such as legal advice and accountancy. A second batch of 25 companies will be announced in December, Shields said. “The fact that we’ve got such a great cohort of companies moving through this programme … is testament to the fact that if you are going to start a business, this is a great place to do it,” said Shields, a former head of social media group Facebook’s operations in Europe. The year-long programme will provide press and promotional backing, educational content and specially designed events. London’s technology hub is attracting foreign companies, with Chinese mobile gaming company Rekoo the latest to announce it would open an office in the area. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gets ready to answer questions from a Chatham House audience, on Oct. 11, 2013, in London. (Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images) Reported by ABC News Gemma Perlin: LONDON Hillary Clinton, in London last Friday to pick up a prize in recognition of her significant and impressive contribution to international diplomacy, was busted by a London traffic cop for an illegally parked Mercedes. Despite the raised voices of Clintons bodyguards, the parking police remained unfazed and would not retract the ticket, reported the Daily Telegraph. Daniel Astaire, a councillor for the borough that Clinton parked in, told ABC News that Clinton would receive no special treatment. The former U.S. secretary of state was parked for nearly 45 minutes without paying. Im sure she will understand that we have to be fair to everyone, regardless of their status on the world stage. Clinton was fined $128, but if she pays the ticket within 14 days, it will be knocked down to $64. The American Embassy in London, which owes $12.5 million in its own parking fines, according to figures from Foreign Secretary William Hague, would not comment on Clintons parking ticket, explaining that she was now a private citizen. Hillary will know as a former diplomat, one must get all their facts together, look for evidence, make an appeal quickly and perceive, Barrie Segal, a U.K. parking ticket expert, told ABC News.If that fails, I am happy to give her mobile number and chat about it.
787 jetliners. The Oslo-based company will add the services next July, serving New Yorks John F. Kennedy airport three times a week and the two other U.S. cities twice weekly, it said today at a press briefing in London. One-way fares will start at 149 pounds ($240) for New York, 199 pounds for Los Angeles and 179 pounds for Fort Lauderdale, 20 miles north of Miami. Theres great demand for high-quality flights at a low fare between the U.K. and the U.S., particularly to and from London Gatwick , where no other airline currently offers these routes, Chief Executive Officer Bjoern Kjos said. Norwegian Air, which will operate the trans-Atlantic services using a fleet of Boeing Co. (BA) 787 Dreamliner planes, is also adding flights from Gatwick to the Mediterranean islands of Corfu, Cyprus, Santorini and Sicily, and to Hungarian capital Budapest, while boosting frequencies on nine existing routes. Flamboyant France heads to playoffs on a high note
We could have scored more as we created a lot of chances.” After five matches without scoring, major doubts were raised about Deschamps’ team, but the turnaround has been spectacular since the dire first half against Belarus last month. France woke up in that game and went on to win 4-2, then thrashed Australia 6-0 on Friday night. “We are much more in control than we were before,” Deschamps said. “The players are in really good shape at the moment, as well. I hope nothing happens to any of them and that they’ll all be here next month.” In the past two games, Giroud and Benzema have scored twice – with Giroud also contributing to France’s second goal on Tuesday night when his header led to an own goal – while Ribery has been simply unstoppable. “All of the forwards showed good movement,” Deschamps said. “They have a lot of freedom in attack and their understanding was generally very good.” Having won the treble with Bayern Munich last season, Ribery says he wants to win the Golden Ball and is clearly on a mission. He scored twice against Belarus, netted one and set up three against Australia, and almost tore the back of the net out with a fantastic early strike against Finland. He then set up Benzema’s goal late on after some sublime trickery and a perfectly weighted cross from the left. “He’s in top form, he’s full of confidence and you can see it,” Deschamps said. “He’s always been an influential player, but he also depends on the players around him.” Giroud started at center forward for the third straight match, with Benzema again on the bench, which looks like a successful strategy by Deschamps.

The incident earlier this month, but which was made public this week, has sparked outrage from immigrant groups and others who say police went too far in publicly shaming the teenager. It has also been an embarrassment for President Francois Hollande’s government, which has tried to portray a kinder France in a bid to distance itself from conservative predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy, known for his tough immigration policies. An investigation into the treatment of the girl, which also drew criticism from within the ranks of Hollande’s Socialist Party, has been launched. Now, Dibrani says she just wants to get back to France. “I was crying on my teacher’s lap and he was crying,” Dibrani said Wednesday, recounting her ordeal in an interview with The Associated Press. “My friends asked: ‘Did you kill someone that the police are looking for you?’ I was afraid. I felt bad and ashamed. “My home is in France,” Dibrani said in French, dressed in jeans and a colorful paisley print tunic.
France beat Finland 3-0 in its last Group game, but Spain’s win over Georgia ensured Les Bleus were consigned to second, while Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal teammates finished a point behind Fabio Capello’s Russia in Group F. The one UEFA group runner-up that will miss out on a playoff spot due to its worst record against the first-, third-, fourth- and fifth-placed sides is Denmark due to there only being eight spots up for grabs. Group B’s race for second between four teams – Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Armenia and the Danes – went down to the wire, and the way the countries took points off each other worked against them in the end. Sweden was the only team heading into the final round of matches to be guaranteed to be in the playoffs, with Germany a distant Group C winner, no teams challenging for second place and the bottom-placed team already decided. The second team to know its playoff fate was Greece, as Bosnia and Herzegovina won to deny the Euro 2004 winner automatic entry to the World Cup. Croatia already bagged second place in Group A and was able to avoid missing out on the playoffs despite losing 2-0 to Scotland in its final game on Tuesday. Iceland, which has never reached a major international tournament in its footballing history, will be delighted to have a crack at World Cup 2014 qualification after Slovenia was defeated 1-0 by Group E winners Switzerland, meaning the Scandinavians’ 1-1 draw with Norway was enough to finish second. Turkey’s 2-0 defeat to Netherlands ensured that Romania finished ahead of its Group D runner-up challengers, and Fatih Terim’s men slipped from second to fourth, with Hungary hopping into third with its 2-0 win over Andorra. The final spot on Tuesday went to Ukraine, which hammered San Marino 8-0 but was pipped to first place in Group H by England. The draw for the two-legged ties will take place Oct. 21 in Zurich. The seeded sides are Croatia, Portugal, Greece and Ukraine, with France, Sweden, Romania and Iceland set to be the unseeded four sides. He says he was part of the motorcycle ride that ended with an attack on the driver of an SUV. Undercover police officer Matt Rodriguez, 28, has worked in plainclothes fighting crime in New York City’s subways and was recently assigned to an elite undercover unit in Internal Affairs, the New York Police Department unit that fights police corruption. But when CBS News met Rodriguez at the district attorney’s office Tuesday, he was the one on the hot seat, CBS News senior correspondent John Miller reported on “CBS This Morning” Wednesday. NYC motorcycle road rage incident may have ruined a large investigation Rodriguez and his lawyer, Pat Bonanno, emerged from a meeting with prosecutors after more than an hour of discussions over the case of the motorcycle assault against SUV driver Alexian Lien in front of his wife and child. Rodriguez said he had nothing to do with the assault. Miller asked Rodriguez, “How hard has this been going through this, especially with all the attention?” Rodriguez said, “It has been difficult, but I can only take it one day at a time from now on.” Rodriguez is now the second New York City undercover officer to come forward to say he was riding with the group that was involved in the assault. Just last week, the first undercover New York City detective who came forward was charged with assault, riot and criminal mischief after investigators said he lied about his role in the attack on the SUV. The lawyer for Rodriguez says his client’s story checks out. Miller asked, “What you told him was you weren’t there for any assault, you weren’t part of any assault, you didn’t even witness any assault?” Bonanno interrupted, saying, “John, with all due respect, I’m gonna stop you right there.” Bonanno says his client had fallen to the rear of the pack of motorcycles and that he didn’t see the confrontation where the SUV was surrounded by motorcycles and drove over two of them to escape. Rodriguez reportedly told investigators he took a different exit off the highway to visit his grandfather in a nursing home, so he was never even on the street where the final assault took place. Bonanno said, “Police Officer Matt Rodriguez voluntarily presented himself to the Manhattan district attorney’s office to answer any and all questions and concerns the had regarding his alleged involvement of the incidents of September 29th. It appears hat the district attorney’s office will discover, as we have known from day one, that there are no acts of criminality on behalf of Matthew Rodriguez.” Asked how it felt to sit down with investigators and get his story out, Rodriguez said, “I was just glad to be given the opportunity to actually say my piece.” Miller asked Bonanno, “Is it appropriate for police officers to be part of some motorcycle gang?” “Number one, this is not a motorcycle gang,” Bonanno said. “Frontline Soldiers was a small group of law enforcement individuals and former veterans. NYPD itself has a motorcycle club, so he was part of an organization of other law enforcement individuals that he thought was involved in charitable organizations and charitable things.” Miller added on “CBS This Morning” that Rodriguez has not been suspended or put on modified assignment, which is assigned to desk duty without a badge or a gun, but prosecutors do have other questions for him, including what contact he did or didn’t have with other officers before, during and after the assault.
The rent-out-your-home service has thrown its weight behind a petition authored by a New York City host named Mishelle. In the petition, she asks the state’s senate to fix what she calls a “poorly written law,” which could curb Airbnb’s reach in the region. “The reason this is happening is because of a poorly written law originally designed to stop slumlords from running illegal hotels with dozens of rental apartments,” Mishelle writes. “As a New Yorker just trying to pay my bills, I don’t understand why they think I’m a slumlord.” “I figure that if we get 20,000 people to sign the petition, we’ll get the state Senate’s attention,” she continues. “If we hit that goal by October 20th, I pledge to deliver the signatures to every senator myself.” As of this writing the petition has surpassed 20,000 signatures, the majority of which were gathered within the last 24 hours. Airbnb also got behind the petition on Monday by sending out an e-mail to its thousands of New York members. “The New York attorney general has subpoenaed the records of almost all of our New York hosts,” Airbnb’s global head of community Douglas Atkin wrote in the e-mail. “We are fighting the subpoena with all we’ve got, but poorly written laws make for even worse enforcement, and unless you help to stop it once and for all, the laws may never get better and New Yorkers will continue to suffer.” The debacle between New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Airbnb has been ongoing over the past year, but it got heated when Schneiderman filed a subpoena earlier this month. The subpoena requests three years’ worth of data on thousands of Airbnb New York hosts. Airbnb has said that it has 225,000 community members in New York. The Attorney General’s office is specifically looking for data on 15,000 hosts — it’s unclear if this includes almost all of Airbnb’s New York hosts. While Airbnb has said that it will cooperate with New York’s lawmakers to root out illegal hotel operators and slumlords, it also filed a motion last week stating the subpoena was “unreasonably broad” and it won’t turn over sweeping amounts of information on hosts who have done no wrong.
Over the past five years weve considered various options, he said. While digital ad sales are growing, it has not been enough to stem the shrinking dollars coming from the weekly print edition, increasing pressure on Editor-in-Chief Adam Moss. It would be sad if it happened, but it would not surprise me, said Steve Cohn, editor of Media Industry Newsletter, which showed that New Yorks ad pages were down 9.2 percent year-over-year through Oct. 14. Digital now accounts for about half the companys ad revenue, but that is attributable as much to prints steady erosion as it is to digitals gains in recent years. Before the recession, New York racked up 3,343 ad pages in 2007, according to MIN 1,500 pages more than it is expected to tally this year. Ad pages fell 12 percent in 2008, followed by a staggering 27 percent drop in 2009. And in a move that is sure to be worrisome as it pushes for digital dollars, Web traffic in September dropped to 3.6 million unique monthly visitors, according to comScore, a 16 percent drop from last year. A Wasserstein family trust inherited the magazine after the death of Bruce Wasserstein in 2009. The financier brought it for $55 million back in 2003. So far, the Wasserstein family has kept the magazine and websites rolling, but it is not clear what the trusts capacity is to absorb losses over a prolonged period. The most recent example in the weekly media world holds little promise. When stereo equipment magnate Sidney Harman died in April 2011, only months after rescuing Newsweek, his family trust soon bailed on the money-losing magazine. Like other weekly publications, New York has resorted to more double issues in slow periods and a gradual cutback in frequency.
